Primary Goals

The Devils in Danger Foundation Inc. has three primary goals.

  • Firstly, to raise awareness in Australia and worldwide, about the plight our Tassie Devils

  •

  • face with DFTD in Tasmania and to inform people on what they can do to help.

Secondly, to assist the Research teams working on DFTD.  Funds raised are utilised to

purchase remote surveillance equipment for researching the progress and onslaught of

DFTD in wild devil populations.

Thirdly, to be able to breed Tasmanian devils in captivity humanely, eliminating the unacceptable

injuries currently being experienced by devils in captive breeding programs throughout Australia

Something Wild, Wildlife Sanctuary at National Park has developed a revolutionary new breeding program with the assistance

of industry partners, for breeding devils that minimises and in most cases, eliminates injury while mating captive Tasmanian devils.

Something Wild is unique as it holds the last devils to come from the wild in Tasmania before the DFTD quarantine was put in place.

While these devils have been managed separately for the last three years, they hold valuable genetics for the captive populations in Tasmania

See the Progression of this ugly disease in this pictorial view ( warning- images are horrific)

  • A FEW QUICK FACTS.....

  • Latest modelling by the Govt. shows our wild devil populations are reducing at a horrific FIFTY PERCENT EVERY YEAR

  • We need to act NOW!

  • This debilitating disease has a 100% mortality rate and  appears as cancerous lesions, mainly on the face. Once signs of the

  •  disease appear, the animals quickly succumb to the  effects of the disease, usually dying within a few short months.

  • We are the custodians of the amazing animals and we need to act quickly to SAVE THE SPECIES!

  •  As the cancers develop in affected devils, they may become emaciated, as many tumours interfere with teeth and feeding.

  • Many females lose their young they may be carrying.

It is not yet known how to control or halt the disease or all the ways in which the disease is transmitted so this is a

very serious problem which will  ultimately affect the SURVIVAL OF THIS UNIQUE TASMANIAN SPECIES
