Something Wild is a Non Government Funded Private wildlife sanctuary and is the worlds largest Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary encompassing approx. 1200 acres. The main visitor site covers an area of 30 acres allowing plenty of space for these animals to feed and interact as they would in the wild. There are pathways around the sanctuary to allow for full access for wheelchairs, to all the facilities. A golf car is available for groups.Why are we different? We are not a 'Wildlife Park or Zoo' in the traditional sense. We are a wildlife sanctuary for the care of these animals. We encourage our visitors to;
We take great pride in the fact that we have moved away from the traditional 'wildlife park' where most visitors have been used to seeing our native wildlife over previous years. Our feedback indicates our visitors like to see large habitats designed to suit an animals specific needs. In years gone by, wildlife parks and zoo's have not been the most comfortable and humane places for animals to live. We are changing this at Something Wild. What do we offer our visitors? Something Wild is set on the banks of the Tyenna River and we very fortunate to have a family of three platypus living freely in the ponds of the river. These platypus are very active and can be spotted at most times of the day. Our visitors have an 85% success rate of seeing one or more of these wonderful creatures in the wilds of the Tyenna River. This is a very unique and exciting part of Something Wild and one that we feel gives us a distinct point of difference between other wildlife institutes in Tasmania. We have a large range of animals living at Something Wild. We are a rehabilitation Wildlife Sanctuary set within a beautiful bushland setting incorporating habitats for our wildlife. These include cuddly koalas have Joey's just emerging from the pouch. Also we have rehabilitated Wombats, Golden Possums, Squirrel Gliders, Pademelons, Bennetts Wallabies and Forester kangaroo's. We also incorporate Emu's, Masked Owls, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos and other Australian parrots and much more in our habitat displays. Something Wild has also introduced Eastern Quolls to our wildlife family Something Wild is the home to the Eastern Quoll- Buffer Against Extinction project, Australia's only Govt recognised breeding program for eastern quolls, now extinct on mainland Australia. Animal Nursery and Gift Shop We have an animal nursery and Interpretation Centre at Something Wild which also incorporates our gift shop. Find a special gift or keepsake to remember your visit. There are usually plenty of babies in the nursery depending on the animals injured or orphaned at the time. You may see a baby wombat or a cuddly pademelon which you can give scratch. Other close by attractions We are located within half an hour's drive from the Styx Valley,
home of the tallest hardwood tree's in the world. Come and see these
